***The year 148 BC marked the definitive end of Macedonian independence. Following Rome’s victory in the Third Macedonian War (168 BC), the kingdom was initially split into four client republics. Amphipolis was designated as the capital of the first region (Macedonia Prima)

Obverse (Artemis): Artemis was highly revered in Amphipolis, famously worshipped there as Artemis Tauropolos. Her presence on the coin connects directly to the city’s deep religious and civic heritage.

Reverse (Fighting Goats): Goats hold immense symbolic weight in Macedonian history. The mythical founder of the old Macedonian royal capital, Aigai, was famously guided there by a herd of goats (the name Aigai itself translates to "Goat City")***
