Demetrios I Soter — Drachm, Cornucopia, Antioch

Sold by Numis-Lens

Description

Struck at Antioch in 152/151 BC, in the closing years of Demetrios I Soter's reign. The obverse carries his diademed head right, modelled with the heavy, fleshy features the Antioch dies gave him; the portrait stands in high relief and is sharply struck, with the flan's full circle preserved.

The reverse shows a cornucopia oriented to the left, flanked by the legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ — of King Demetrios the Saviour — set in two vertical columns either side of the horn. Monograms and the Seleucid regnal year stand below it, the year only partly legible on this flan. Both columns of the legend read clearly and the surfaces carry light, even cabinet toning.
