Description
JR-2. Rarity-4. First year of issue for dime production at the United States Mint. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle design is adapted from the 1795 Silver dollar. From a purist standpoint, the 1796, with 15 stars, is a single year sub-type since the 1797 has either 16 or 13 stars. This variety is the only known use of both the obverse and reverse dies and is believed to be the last variety produced. There are seven known die marriages but the JR-2 is the only variety known in the perfect state without cuds or extensive cracks. Plucked from an album and submitted by HJB, this is a handsome, dove gray example with hints of pale gold and pale lilac and given the grade limitations, a pleasing coin overall.
