Qatar & Dubai Coinage (1966–1973)

This Qatar & Dubai five-coin set represents a fascinating and short-lived chapter in Gulf monetary history.

These coins were first introduced in 1966, following the devaluation of the Indian Rupee, which had previously circulated widely across the Gulf region. To establish monetary independence and stabilize trade, Qatar and the Trucial State of Dubai jointly issued their own currency, known as the Qatar & Dubai Riyal.

Struck only between 1966 and 1973, this coinage existed for just seven years, making it a brief but historically significant issue.

The series came to an end when Dubai joined the newly formed United Arab Emirates in 1971, and the UAE Dirham was officially introduced in 1973, while Qatar adopted its own national riyal the same year.

Coins from this period symbolize a transitional era, marking the shift from colonial-era currency systems toward modern national identities in the Gulf.

Today, Qatar & Dubai coins are highly appreciated by collectors for their historical importance, limited striking period, and role in the economic foundation of the modern Gulf states.

This full set, all dated 1966, is well-preserved and visually attractive, making it an excellent addition to any Middle Eastern or world coin collection.
