Jefferson Nickel, 1982-D, 5¢, MS64, BN, Double Struck on 1 Cent Planchet, NGC. An exceptionally appealing double error. Off-metal strikes typically suffer from incomplete detail due to the smaller planchet size. In this case, however, a second strike forced the undersized cent planchet to expand dramatically, spreading outward to nearly the diameter of a standard nickel. The additional pressure enhanced the overall definition while preserving the fascinating mismatch of denomination and fabric that makes double-denomination errors so compelling.
