Description

Nice coin, some roughness on the strike on both sides but overall in good condition and retains a lot of the original silvering

Maximian was Diocletian's co-emperor and Augustus of the West under the Tetrarchy, abdicating alongside him in 305 AD, but he repeatedly returned to power until he was forced to take his own life in 310 AD by his son-in-law Constantine. The follis was introduced in Diocletian's sweeping currency reform, and its GENIO POPVLI ROMANI reverse was struck at mints across the entire empire - a deliberate symbol of Tetrarchic unity. Alexandria had only recently been brought into this system after Diocletian crushed the Egyptian revolt of Domitius Domitianus in 297-298 AD.
