Description
Colonial, 1795-Token, VF30, Liberty and Security (Plain Edge), GW-48.Most Washington tokens of this era were actually struck in England by the very well established private minting industry. Some were satirical, others honorific, some were meant to circulate at home and abroad and some like this one, at least according to Walter Breen were made to entice the fledgling American government to award contracts to private mints in an era where the future of the US mint was far from certain.
A handsome example of this popular token, characteristic weak strike in the center of the design from the screw press technology of the time. Even pleasing brown surfaces.
