Struck in anticipation of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, this medal is among the most attractive of the many privately produced pieces of exonumia created for the fair. Produced by Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart, Germany and marketed in the United States by the Heeren Brothers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the design draws clear inspiration from George T. Morgan’s Liberty head motif. Rendered in bold high relief, the portrait possesses a striking sculptural quality that makes the piece particularly impressive in hand., NGC.
