Description
Struck at Siscia in Pannonia, AD 313–315, just after Licinius crushed Maximinus Daia and took the whole Roman East. Siscia sat on the fault line between his territory and Constantine's - within a year the two would fight their first war not far from this mint.
The reverse legend IOVI CONSERVATORI - "To Jupiter the Preserver" - shows Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on a globe and leaning on a sceptre, his eagle at his feet with a wreath in its beak. Jupiter was the patron deity of Licinius' regime, the old religion's answer to Constantine's new Christian imagery. SIS in exergue, officina letter in the right field.
