Description

Aelius as Caesar, Medallic Sestertius?; 136-138 AD, Rome, 137 AD, Sestertius AE 35, 29.93g. Bust var.

of BM-1918, pl. 100.3. Obv: L AELIVS - CAESAR Head bare r. Rx: CONCORD in exergue, TR POT - COS II on l. and r., S - C across field, Concordia seated l., holding patera in r. hand and resting l. arm on small cornucopia which is placed on seat behind her. This is possibly a medallic piece rather than a coin meant for general circulation, judging from its broad, round flan and from the fact that it seems to share its obverse die with a typologically similar sestertius of Aelius Caesar in Madrid (RIC-2933, pl. 217), which however adds two further medallic characteristics to the mixture, namely a bimetallic flan and the omission of the usual letters S C from the reverse legend. The portrait is rather good and relatively untouched, although the rest of the coin is less so.
