France, FRENCH PARTICIPATION, EXPOSITION FRANCO-BRITANNIQUE, 1908 Medal, UNC, Bronze arch top Plaquette 69 X 57mm medal by Charles Pillet. EM: BRONZE and with the cornucopia. An entirely pictographic scene. To the left the female personage of Great Britain is seated on a wave lapped rock. She wears a crown and holds boughs of oak in her left hand as she greets the personage of France, “Marianne,” who has arrived on a cloud floating over the waters. They hold right hands while France also supports the fasces with her left hand. At the right bottom, water birds fly over the waves. Signed: CH. PILLET lower right, in a tiny exergue/ A seminude female figure is seated, left. Behind her are the words PAX LABOR in a sunburst. She holds the poles of two flags, that of Great Britain and France. Intertwined with the poles and with the escutcheons of the Republic of France and Great Britain is a ribbon banner bearing the words, partially obscured: COMITE FRANÇAISE DES EXPOSITIONS A L’ETRANGER, which trails off to the lower right. In the right distance the exposition grounds, including many buildings and a large stadium, are seen from a substantial height. The monogram CP appears in the lower right corner. In the exergue: EXPOSITION FRANCO-BRITTANIQUE/ LONDRES MCMVIII. Condition of the metal is good, noting a number of discolorations on both surfaces. From the T.H.G Collection. This medal was struck by the French COMITE FRANÇAISE DES EXPOSITIONS A L’ETRANGER, as seemed to be standard procedure when the French participated in an exposition hosted by another country, England in this case.
