Description
Col. John Fremont, Campaign Token, DeWitt-JF-1856-12.
The Presidential contest of 1856 was a three way race. The Democrats ran James Buchanan after ousting Franklin Pierce the incumbent for the office. The Native American Party also dubbed the "Know Nothings" ran the former Vice President and President Millard Fillmore while the newest party, the Republicans ran their first ever candidate, Colonel John C. Fremont. The election led to a Democrat victory and eventually the Civil War.
These tokens come very weakly struck, especially in the center. A well loved pocket piece at some point in its life but still a lovely circulated example of this tough political token.
