Licinius I — Follis, IOVI CONSERVATORI, Nicomedia

Sold by Numis-Lens

Description

Struck at Nicomedia between AD 313 and 317, in the first years after Licinius took the whole east from Maximinus Daia. Nicomedia was his capital and his busiest mint, and Jupiter was his answer to Constantine's solar coinage.

The reverse reads IOVI CONSERVATORI, to Jupiter the Preserver. Jupiter stands left holding Victory on a globe and a sceptre, an eagle at his feet with a wreath in its beak, the officina letter A in the right field and SMN in the exergue.
