Description
Germany, DEUTSCHLAND ŰBER ALLES, 1914 Medal, UNC, An early WW I medal in which Germany is happy to proclaim “Germany Over All.” A powerful statement that Deutschland was ready to take on all comers.
Gilded bronze Oval, 50x37mm by Hermann Hahn. The collector notes that medal was sold through Adolph E. Cahn, a Frankfurt coin and medal dealer, to benefit Kriegsfürsorge, war welfare work. Circumferential inscription: DEUTSCHLAND UEBER ALLES IN DER WELT at top, with MCMXIV, just below. In center the rather pudgy bust portrait of “Germania,” facing half left/A well muscled nude warrior, double handed sword over his right shoulder dominates the verso. A fragment of a poem by Theodor Koerner (1791-1813) a poet/soldier who wrote fiery poetry and died for Germany at age 21, fills the spaces on either side of the figure: DAS/ HOECHSTE/ HEIL – DAS/ LETZTE/ LIEGT/ IM /SCHWERTE. (Approximate translation: The highest – and the last – salvation lies in the sword.)Although there is a little rub on high points of the reverse, this is really nice looking in hand! From the T.H.G Collection.
