Description

Hellenistic Magarian Redware Bowl, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd-1st Century BC. The surface arranged in multiple registers of low-relief ornament, including repeated tongues, beaded bands with an egg-and-dart variant, a floral frieze of open-petaled blossoms alternating with stemmed tulips, and a band of acanthus leaves with wavy tendrils. The base is finished with a single open-petaled blossom within a beaded border. Bowls of this type functioned as drinking cups, eventually replacing the kantharos; their ornate Megarian-style decoration is thought to emulate the forms and designs of luxury metal prototypes. Ex-Dere Family Collection, New York, NY. Diameter 5 3/8" H. 3 3/8" (13.7 cm x 8.6 cm)..
