Description

JUDAEA, Agrippa II (49-95 AD) with Domitian; 49-95 CE, Maritima, RY 26 of Agrippa II=85/6 CE, AE20, 5.10g. Hendin-6356, RPC-II-2272, Meshorer-36, Sofaer Coll.-223. Obv. IMP CA D VES F DOM AVG GER COS XII, laureate head of Domitian right, wearing aegis. Rx. ΕΠΙ ΒΑ ΑΓΡΙ, large SC, ET - KϚ (date) in exergue. Note: This coin was struck under the joint authority of Emperor Domitian and King Agrippa II at the mint of Maritima, an important coastal city in Roman Judaea. Agrippa II, son of Agrippa I, retained limited authority in the region under Roman oversight. The obverse portrays the emperor in traditional Roman iconography, asserting imperial dominance, while the reverse emphasizes Agrippa II’s local governance (ΕΠΙ ΒΑ ΑΓΡΙ) and features the large SC (Senatus Consulto), signaling authorization by the Roman Senate. The exergual date, ET – KϚ, records the 26th year of Agrippa II’s reign (85/6 CE). Maritima issues are relatively rare compared with Caesarea Panias and provide insight into the Roman-Jewish administrative arrangements during Domitian’s rule. Ex coll. of David Hendin.Strong portrait, even though the coin is flatly-struck on the lower left side.. aEF
