Description

Roman Egypt Terracotta Statuette of Harpokrates, ca. 1st Century BC - 2nd Century AD. An endearing terracotta figurine of Harpokrates (Horus the Child), depicted in characteristic Hellenistic-Roman style as a plump, youthful deity. The god depicted facing forward, displaying a soft, rounded physique. He wears a distinctively styled, tall headdress typical of Alexandrian domestic cult figures. In his hands, he cradles a lyre against his left side and perches atop a small pot, symbolic of abundance, celebration, and the fertility. The reverse remains mostly unworked, as is standard for molded votives of this period. Some loss to the back, rejoined at the neck and instrument. A charming example of domestic religious devotion in Greco-Roman Egypt. H. 4 3/4" W. 2 3/4" (12.1 cm x 7 cm)..
