Description
This is an ancient Greek bronze coin issued under Agathocles, who ruled as the Tyrant and later the King (Basileus) of Syracuse in Sicily (circa 295–289 BC).
Obverse (Left)
Iconography: The head of Artemis Soteira (Artemis the Savior) facing right, with her hair elegantly swept back.
Inscription:
To the right of the profile, the Greek text reads ΣΩΤΕΙΡΑ (SOTEIRA), meaning "Savior."
Reverse (Right)
Iconography: A horizontal, highly stylized winged thunderbolt, a classic symbol of Zeus associated with Hellenistic royal authority.
Inscription:
Top line: [ΑΓ]ΑΘΟΚΛΕΟΣ (Agathokleos), meaning "Of Agathocles." (The first two letters are partially worn or off-flan on this example).
Bottom line: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ (Basileos), meaning "Of the King."
Together, the reverse legend translates to "Of King Agathocles." This specific issue belongs to the final period of his reign, struck after he adopted the royal title Basileus in emulation of the successors of Alexander the Great.
