Description

Attaea was a small city in Mysia whose coinage is scarce, with only eight examples of this type recorded in RPC. Rather than an emperor's portrait, the obverse depicts the Hiera Synkletos, the personified 'Sacred Senate' of Rome, a popular way for Greek cities of Asia Minor to express loyalty to Roman authority. Athena sacrificing at an altar on the reverse reflects the civic piety at the heart of local identity under the Antonines.
