Description

A famous coin of the late republic, this issue depicts the Temple of Vesta flanked by a voting urn and a ballot market A C (Absolvo / Condemno or Acquit / Condemn).  Longinus's ancestor had architected the Lex Cassia Tabellaria in 137 BC which required secret ballots.  Longinus was either the brother or 1st cousin of Cassius Longinus, the lead conspirator along with Decimus and Junius Brutus in 44 BC.  This moneyer actually supported Caesar, fled to Caesar's camp in Ravenna in 49 BC, and was appointed governor of Spain where his tyrannical rule resulted in him fleeing and drowning in a shipwreck near the mouth of the Ebro in 47 BC.
