Description

Minted in 111-110 BC, this coin boasts a rare triga on the reverse (most depict a quadriga or biga), likely reflecting the three moneyers of the year.  Also rare is the fact that all three moneyers put their names on a single coin - most often, moneyers made individual issues - likely reflecting wartime unity (Jugurthine War, 112-106 BC). Appius Claudius Pulcher (a member of the dominant Claudia gens) eventually became Consul in 79 as part of the Sullan order.  Mancinus served as Tribune in 107 BC and helped facilitate the rise of Marius by introducing the bill that stripped the aristocrat Metellus of command in Numidia in favor of Marius.
