Description
Struck at Trier in AD 310–313, this is a co-emperor issue: a coin in Licinius' name from a mint firmly under Constantine's control, struck while the two Augusti were still allies in the crumbling Tetrarchy. The stern, bearded soldier-portrait is typical of Trier's fine late-Tetrarchic engraving.
The reverse legend GENIO POP ROM - Genio Populi Romani, "To the Genius of the Roman People" - shows the Genius standing left, turreted, loins draped, offering a patera and holding a cornucopiae, with T–F across the fields. The guardian spirit of the Roman state, on the eve of the empire's turn to Christianity. Mintmark PTR: first officina of Trier.
