***Britain stretched their dwindling silver supply and generate raw bullion for new native copies, local communities systematically shaved the borders off old Roman coins already in circulation—including 50-year-old pieces from Constantius II's reign. They deliberately left the emperor's portrait intact so the clipped coin could still be recognized and accepted as currency. A 5th-Century Phenomenon: Archeological data shows that this clipping did not happen between 351 and 354. Instead, it occurred much later, around AD 409–410, when the Roman military withdrew from Britain. Left isolated, the local population was cut off from new silver coin shipments from continental mints.***
