Roman Large Matched Pair of Bronze Lion Chest Handles, ca. 1st-3rd Century AD. Together now for almost two millennia, this rare, large and matched pair of Roman bronze lion-headed appliques were once the handles of a large chest. Each circular bronze applique depicts the face of a lion with its gaping mouth holding the ring handle. Their features are both modeled and engraved. Each applique has its original, natural and composite green patina with reddish iron oxide traces from the original nails that attached it to the chest. Excellent condition, rare large type.
