Description
Roman Empire Maximinus Thrax 235-236 AD early-reign issue AR 20mm 3.30gm Denarius, Rome mint, VF
Obv: IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind.
Rev: FIDES MILITVM, Fides standing facing, head left, holding two military standards. Early-reign issue, struck on a slightly irregular flan; silver content typical of the period.
Ref: Rome RIC IV 7A.
This is a historical significance coin: Elevated by the Rhine army after the assassination of Severus Alexander in 235, Maximinus Thrax depended on military backing to legitimize his rule and finance frontier campaigns. The FIDES MILITVM reverse explicitly promotes the loyalty of the troops, a central political message at the outset of his reign. His short tenure inaugurated the third-century crisis, culminating in his overthrow and he died during the senatorial revolt of 238
