M. Porcius Laeca. Denarius

M. Porcius Laeca; 125 BC, Denarius, 3.80g. Crawford-270/1, RBW-1088, Syd-513. Obv: LAECA, Helmeted head of Roma r; below chin, star (mark of value). Rx: ROMA / M PORC, Liberty driving fast quadriga r. holding pileus; above, Victory flying l. to crown her. According to Crawford, this reverse is a reference to the passing of the Leges Porciae, broadening the application of the previous Lex Valerianus which allowed a Roman citizen, condemned by a magistrate to death or scourging, the right of appeal to the people (provocatio ad populum).
